More about the Petro-People

The Southwest area of the United States is a land of aridity and scarcity, with an almost overwhelming array and variety of dramatic land formations. Amidst these formations lived several tribes and nations of peoples over time. These people found it important to leave images on the canyons and cave walls. Some of these images were part of a discrete language understood by many of these cultures. Most of these images bespeak of persons simply trying to connect, whether to higher powers, others of their tribe, or passersby across imagined and unimaged centuries. Of the countless types and styles of images found across this land, twenty have been chosen to “personify” attributes of change, traits, and qualities of the “Ways.”.
